Wayland the Smith, also called Völundr in Old Norse, was both a legendary sword smith and maker of priceless works of art. This image is based on a 7th C Frankish Casket. In the Nibelungenlied Wayland made a sword for the hero Sigfried so he could kill a dragon and take its hoard of gold. Wayland then planned to then kill Sigried but the plan failed - read the story to find out why.
