Wild boars ran free in the forests of northern Europe. They provided a major source of meat, sport, hunting challenge and a symbol of intelligence, cunning, and fighting fury. Hunting them was training for war requiring a great deal of skill, bravery and strength. During the early Vendel Period wild boars could be found on fighting helmets which gave them the nickname of Pig Warriors. Early immigrants to Sweden were called the Svea.
