Penannular brooches are common across Scandinavia. This design is from Sweden, eastern Baltic, Russia and Ukraine. The facet design on the ends of the brooch are similar to the way Roman craftsmen faceted semiprecious stones. Circles and dots appear to be a Scandinavian addition and the spiral design is more commonly found on Gotland in Sweden.
The brooch is designed for heavier fabric such as cloaks.
